MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern softball team (13-16, 2-8 SSC) fell to the Barry Buccaneers (17-10, 5-2 SSC), 6-1, Friday night in Miami Shores, Fla.
Samira Tanaka (Jr., Sao Paulo, Brazil) was the Sharks' offense on the evening, recording half of the team’s hits, with two, and bringing in the lone NSU run of the game in the third inning.
Chrissy Tabulov (Fr., Palm Harbor, Fla.) and
Lorena Spaulding (So., Pembroke Pines, Fla.) were the other two Sharks with hits Friday, both of which were singles.
Two doubles in the first inning allowed the Bucs to take a 1-0 lead early in the game. However, the Sharks bounced back in the third, when leadoff hitter Spaulding showed off her speed as she singled on a bunt-and-run. Spaulding was then able to advance into scoring position after a
Melanie Spicola (So., Umatilla, Fla.) sacrifice bunt. Tanaka then smacked a well-hit ball into right field, allowing Spaulding to score from second.
The tie was short-lived after Barry scored a run of their own in the next half-inning. The Sharks were knocking on the door in the fourth, after two Buccaneers errors allowed
Marissa Raimo (Sr., Hampton Bays, N.Y.) to reach third with one out on the board. However, Barry’s starting pitcher Alexis Yohe (8-5) was able to get out of the jam, striking out and popping up the next two batters to end the inning unscathed.
With the game in striking distance going into the sixth, Barry ended all hope with a big three-run inning to put the game out of reach.
Jennie Von Doellen (11-11) struck out another six batters in the loss, giving her an impressive 130 strikeouts so far this season.
The Sharks will look for revenge, as they finish their series at Barry in a doubleheader Saturday, starting at 12 p.m.
